WW staff given first chance to become Special Constables

Police staff in the Wales and Western Area will be soon able to make history thanks to a pioneering scheme offering them the chance to become a Special Constable with BTP.

Special Constables are seen as a crucial cog in the wheel of BTP’s operations and now dedicated, self-disciplined and self-motivated members of staff are being handed the chance to discover what life is like on the policing side of the coin by signing up to become a ‘Special’, while still carrying out their normal work.

Full training will be provided to successful W&W applicants who will be given time off from normal duties to deliver support to regular officers in their new role as a Special Constable.

This unique opportunity is being piloted in the Wales and Western Area before being rolled out to other parts of the country, so this really is a chance to become a true pioneer.

Informal presentations highlighting the scheme are being arranged to take place in Birmingham, Bristol and Cardiff next month.

Anyone who feels they have the skills and dedication to become a Special Constable, or for more information, contact Simon Woods on 054 4940 or [email protected], or Kim Ward on 054 2076 or [email protected].

Seven arrests in operation to target football thugs

Four men have been charged with public order offences and three others have been released on bail pending further inquiries after BTP officers swooped on addresses across the West Midlands as part of a crackdown on football-related disorder.

The seven arrests earlier this week formed the first phase of Operation Chisel which saw officers target offenders captured on CCTV during a fight at Telford railway station at about 6pm on Saturday 11 April.

The incident was also witnessed by a number of passengers and railway staff.

Liz Lewandowski, of the Operational Support Unit, which was involved in the raids, said: “This is Phase 1 of the operation. There will be two more phases with more arrests expected following this incident.”

Inspector Stuart Middlemas added: “These arrests send out a positive message to all that football-related disorder on the railway network will not be tolerated.”
