Birthday honours bring hat-trick of awards

The Chief Constable Ian Johnston has been knighted and two BTP officers have received MBEs in the 2009 Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Ian Johnston becomes the first BTP Chief Constable to be knighted, after eight years at the helm.

Honoured alongside him are DC Graham Naughton from the North Eastern Area and Force Intelligence Bureau, and PC Steve Wareing from Leeds, who both receive MBEs.

CC Johnston said: “I am absolutely delighted to be given this award.  I believe that it is very much a direct consequence of what all the women and men in British Transport Police have achieved over the last eight years.

“They have done a fantastic job in helping the passengers, staff and all who use the railways, not only to be safe, but also to feel safer whilst on the system, and I know they will continue to improve this service in the years ahead.”

Newly promoted Secretary of State for Transport, Lord Adonis sent a message to Sir Ian following the announcement:  ‘It is richly deserved and a tribute not only to your superb leadership of BTP but also to the dedication of the Force as a whole which is doing such a magnificent job,’ he said.

Sir Ian’s successor, Deputy Chief Constable Andy Trotter, said that he was ‘personally overjoyed’ by the news:  “I have worked with Ian in three police forces and he is an excellent police officer who inspires his colleagues and truly listens to the communities he serves.”

All change for Fed in the North West

Following the retirement of Joe Connor a number of interim changes have been made in the setup of the Police Federation in the North West.

With immediate effect DS Glenn Lee will be acting as Area Secretary whilst DI Steve Lewis will take on the mantle of Chairman.

DS Lee said: “These changes have been made to ensure all Federation members continue to receive a good quality of service on area whilst being mindful of the fact that there will be an election in 2010 for the Fed Reps.”

The current Fed Reps remain Andy Baxter (Manchester) and Nobby Goodband (Liverpool)

Fixtures released for coming football season

The fixtures for the 2009/10 football season have now been release and the Operations department is busy looking at the key dates and fixtures that will need policing by BTP in the North West.

As part of that planning process the department will be in consultation with the Federation to ensure minimal inconvenience to staff whilst providing resources to the fixtures where necessary.

Chief Inspector Eddie Wylie said: “We have unprecedented numbers of north west teams in the Premiership this season which will undoubtedly create an increased demand on BTP, but I know we have the staff, drive and determination to meet this challenge.”

He added: “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all staff for their efforts and hard work during last season, it is very much appreciated.”

New number for business centre

The Human Resources Business Centre now has a new contact number.

Staff at the centre, who deal with enquiries ranging from the processing of forms to providing guidance on policy and legislation, can now be contacted by email or by ringing 0121 634 5626.

The Business Centre exists to provide support and advice to line managers and to enable them to manage their staff effectively and efficiently. However the emphasis is on line managers to identify and take ownership of issues – calling upon the Business Centre for support where necessary.

There are a variety of tools available to line managers to assist in this – many of which can be found on the HR Intranet site.

And, of course, the North West benefits from the expertise of HR Business Partner Emma Briscoe who can offer the HR perspective on business development and planning as well as assisting with job design, employee relations, diversity issues, workforce planning and disciplinary matters.

Want to play five-a-side?

Stuart Holmes is looking for any budding Rooneys, Gerrards or even Jagielkas to pull on their trainers and register their interest for a new five-a-side league.

Stuart, the Finance and Corporate Services Manager, wants to set up a league for all North West officers and staff and is looking for players of all ages and abilities to sign up.

He said: “We may not be able to pay £80million for our players, but with enough people signing up I’m sure we can create a fun and competitive league.

“I’m looking for individuals or teams who would like to get involved and once I have an idea of numbers we can start pulling together the final plans regarding the size of any competition and the venue for matches.”

To register your interest please send an email to Stuart with the subject line Five-a-side.
