Mock exams for OSPRE sergeant to Inspectors

Mock exams for sergeants wanting to make the step to inspector will be conducted on August 6 at FHQ.

The exam is designed to give individuals an opportunity to see what is expected in the exam, identify areas they need to work on and experience in working under the pressure of exam conditions.

Superintendent Adrian Young said:

"We are committed to helping our staff achieve their potential within the organisation, and yet too often we see people who are operationally ready for promotion but let themselves down due to insufficient preparation for their exam. I encourage those that are ready to progress to the Inspector level to take part in these exams."

The mock exam will be of three hours duration and those wishing to sit the exam have a choice of two slots as follows:

6 Aug 2009           FHQ G1/G2                           09:30 – 12:30

6 Aug 2009           FHQ G1/G2                           13:00 – 16:00

Candidates will be expected to return to their place of duty after the exam.

Anyone who wishes to book a place in the exams should email Force Examinations Officer Karen Seleman.

Violent robber jailed for 8 years

A man has been jailed for up to 8 years for a series of robberies in West London.

Marcus Francis, aged 20, of Chiswick was sentenced at Kingston Crown Court in March 2009.

Francis committed a series of robberies which he carried out on the BTP and the MET, some involving a firearm.

The BTP offences were at Hounslow Railway Station on 15th September 2008 (OIC DC Gilbert), when a passenger was robbed at knife point and Brentford Railway Station on 1st October 2008 (OIC DS Martin ADE) when he and another suspect attempted to rob staff at the coffee shop on the platform.

The accomplice has not yet been identified.

Francis had 15 counts and ‘TIC’s’ and was sentenced for between 2 to 8 years imprisonment.

Vehicle out of service? Disable the radio!

From Monday 1 June, radios in vehicles taken out of service must be disabled.

All BTP’s Airwave radios are provided under licence from the Home Office and it is a licence condition that all radios in vehicles must be disabled when the vehicle is out of service.

‘Airwave is a digital encrypted system, so it is very important that access to the network is strictly regulated,’ says Steve Lumley, Airwave Tactical Advisor from the FHQ Communications Team.

‘Whenever a vehicle is taken out of service, either permanently for decommissioning or temporarily for service, maintenance or repair, the radio must be disabled.

‘This applies to any vehicles taken out of service for any reason, where they are out of BTP control.  If you hand the keys to a third party, ensure the radio is disabled.’

Radios can be disable by contacting one of the Force Control Rooms.

Feedback from CCUG

Neil Munro attended the Chief Constables User Group on 22nd May 2009 and has the Chief Constables responses to the questions London South staff and officers put forward for comment.

Possibility of Intranet becoming an Extranet (allowing remote access).

The is deemed too expensive for the force.

Lower pension contributions

This is not likely to happen.

Update on new national uniform

This project is ongoing, but there is a problem with the suppliers who hid the fact that what they were supplying was in fact ‘disposable’ clothing!

There are ongoing negotiations as BTP are tied into a contract with the other Scottish police forces for cost effectiveness.

Re-issues of tunics.

This is not going to happen, however if you need to go to Buckingham Palace for a medal one shall be made for you!

Sickness – (swine flu)

If you are sick, follow the recommended action and stay off work. Sickness policy has been eased recently, but remains.

Request for return of the PR24 Baton (following G20 summit)

Our levels of complaints were very low and our officers were commended for their restraint and professionalism. There are moves available to ‘push’ with the existing baton. PR24 is not coming back.

Access to MET POL Criminal Intelligence system.

There is a heavy cost implication on this so this will not happen.

Total lack of document version control in BTP (forms on Intranet)

To be looked into by the CC

Intranet content not kept up to date

To be looked into by the CC

In regards to this comment on London South, if there are pages that people see are not up to date, please contact Richard Kempton in the first instance as this may be a locally resolved issue.

PNC channel (switching channels for PNC checks and lack of information given)

To be looked into by the CC

Vehicles not fit for purpose

This was discussed at lengths, since providing cars which break down frequently are costing the Police Service in both repair bills and non-attendance of calls. The Chief Constable asked for the report to be forwarded to him.

Officers travel – inconsistency in assistance given to getting officers home after a late arrest

The Chief Constable said “I expect Officers to make their own travel arrangements for rostered duties, however, if an officer is rostered to finish at 11pm, and is retained on duty for, say an arrest, then we must make every effort to get them home”.
