NPT patrol results in three-year jail term for man

A man has been jailed for three years following a routine patrol by a PC attached to a London South Neighbourhood Policing team.

PC Jason Weston-Collinson was conducting a patrol on a train in January last year on the Victoria loop-line when he was approached by distraught male who claimed another passenger had threatened to stab him.

PC Weston-Collinson moved through the train and found a man carrying a lock knife who was acting aggressively and

After escorting the male off the train at Denmark Hill, PC Weston-Collinson had a lengthy talk to the suspect and managed to calm him down and got him to drop the knife before he was able to be apprehended.

The male was charged with possession of a pointed and bladed article and Section 4 public order. The matter went to Southwark Crown Court and the man was jailed for three years.

Fatality guidance – fingerprinting of deceased persons at mortuaries

Without the express authority of the Coroner (or Coroner’s Officer), no London South officer will:

Take a set of fingerprints from any deceased person or

Remove the deceased’s clothing to search for any reason (including the recovery of personal property)

at any mortuary, or in the premises of any undertaker.

Inner London West Jurisdiction:

As a result of specific consultation with Dr Knapman (HM Coroner - Westminster), the following additional guidance should be noted for mortuaries within his jurisdiction:

When dealing with fatalities, officers should consider taking fingerprints from the deceased at the scene of incident.

Officers may take the fingerprints at the holding area of the mortuary, if time is important.

Officers are not allowed to enter a mortuary without the express authority of the Coroner, or Coroner’s Officer.

Where there is an urgency to identify a deceased person during holiday periods or weekends, officers should contact the ‘On Call Duty Coroner’s Officer’ for the relevant area. This person will arrange a convenient time for the police to attend the mortuary in order to take fingerprints from the deceased, (which might have to be in the holding area).

Officers are reminded that a number of Coroner’s Officers within London are trained to take fingerprints from deceased persons and will endeavour to do so if requested. (This facility is only available during normal working hours, however).
