Officer receives
Certificate of Commendation
PC
Stephen Irons has been commended by ACC Alan Pacey for his professional
approach to the planning of Waterloo New Year’s Eve
2008/09. At
the ceremony at Force Headquarters on 7 August, the contingency planner
received a Certificate of Commendation for his role in the event.
Inspector Ian Mixter, who also received an award for the same event, said
of Stephen: “For the last three years he has provided high quality plans
and briefing material for New Year’s Eve, and also ensured that liaison
with other agencies was first class. “His
input to the overall plan ensured the senior command team could
confidently ensure the travelling public could, and did, travel home
safely.” Duty changes
during early September
L
Area has been notified by Force that we will now need to supply cover for
the This
will lead to around 35 officers having their duty rosters amended at short
notice to meet the resource level asked of L
Area. Sector
resource planners are identifying officers who will be notified of the
changes as soon as possible. Chief
Inspector Ray Shields said: “I would also like to apologise to those
officers at police stations who didn’t get sufficient notice of the duty
rosters surrounding DSEI. This was down to an omission in the planning
process and we’re busy sorting it out as quickly as we
can.” Ramadan due to
begin soon
The holy
month of Ramadan is due to start on 21 or 22 August
this year and conclude with the Eid-al-Fitr celebrations on 20,
21 or 22 September – because the Islamic calendar is based on
lunar phases there is often some variation in the start and end date of
Ramadan. The exact dates are subject to the sighting of the
moon. The implications for BTP
involve the subject of fasting and extra prayers – Muslims are required to
fast during the hours of daylight during this time and increase the number
of daily prayers. The
Association of Muslim Police (AMP) has written some advice which is
available on the Briefing
System here. It
includes things such as when
officers are feeling tired or need to pray during their
shift. The AMP
advises that by having early meetings with staff, line managers will avoid
any misunderstanding on when time off is being requested and any other
conflict. Where possible all requests should be made before the start of
Ramadan and staff should not overwhelm line managers at short notice
leaving them difficult decisions to make on the spur of the moment.
Supervisors should discuss these issues with their Muslim staff so that
arrangements can be made in advance. The
Association of Muslim Police can be consulted for any additional guidance,

Primary Immunodeficiency Association (PiA) – a charity for people with
immune system disorders – has written to thank Chief Inspector Alex Carson
for his fundraising. Alex ran the 2009 Flora London Marathon in aid of the
charity, raising £2,211 with an additional £588.36 claimed in Gift
Aid. PiA’s
Member Development and Fundraising Manager Nichola Page wrote: “We greatly
appreciate your hard work. The money will help PiA continue supporting
those people with primary immunodeficiencies and their families, and
improving their quality of life.” The
charity was chosen as Inspector Ian Mixter’s young son Samuel suffers from
the condition. Thanks
