5th June 2009
Sir David Normington

This is to let you know that today we launched our Annual Report www.homeoffice.gov.uk/documents/ho-annual-report-09 which sets out how during 2008-09 the Home Office and our delivery partners have worked together to protect the public. The report also highlights our priorities over the year ahead. This is the first year we have introduced a short summary in addition to the full report, to widen its overall accessibility. This report can also be found at the web address above.

The Annual Report covers our performance in the first year of delivering against a new set of Public Service Agreements. The most recent data shows that together the Department and its Agencies have made strong progress in controlling fair migration that protects the public and contributes to economic growth, and in safeguarding people's identity through the delivery of key programmes that are contributing to the development of the National Identity Service. The Home Office has also made improvements in reducing re-offending and increasing treatment for drug users working with our partners across government and frontline services. In addition to the performance improvements cited we are committed to delivering value for money and it forms an integral part of our duty to provide effective and efficient services to the public. I am pleased to report that we are on track to meet our new Comprehensive Spending Review 2007 objective to deliver gains of £1.7 billion by 2010-11.

Thank you for all the support you have given us in the past year and for the part you have played in making 2008-09 a year of excellent progress and performance. I look forward to working with you during the next year and to achieving even greater progress.

Yours sincerely,

Sir David Normington
