Wetherspoons' profits up as chairman blames government for binge drinking
JD Wetherspoon's founder and chairman Tim Martin has criticised the government for saddling the industry with an 'unsustainable' tax burden, and for creating a 'vodka-drinking culture' by driving young people out of the pubs and into the street. Wetherspoons has also reported strong half-year results with total sales up 6.5per cent to £469m, and profits up 2 per cent to £30.8m. Read more here

CCTV generated 280 arrests in Surrey district last year
Nearly 300 arrests were made across Staines, Ashford, Shepperton, Sunbury Cross and Stanwell, Surrey, in the past year due to crimes being captured on CCTV. Read more here

Recession 'fuels' business crime: evidence
According to a report by the London Chamber of Commerce a fifth of businesses in London fell victim to some sort of crime during the last year. A third of the businesses targeted by criminals did not report it. Read more here

Has 'skunk' changed the stakes in cannabis debate?
The link between skunk use and the triggering of schizophrenia and psychosis get stronger by the month, says Debora Orr in The Independent. The Home Secretary, only a few weeks ago, cited the emergence of skunk as the main reason why she decided to return cannabis to its class B status, having downgraded it to class C four years ago. Met backs down on CCTV in pubs

Government announces another £5m for Tackling Knives Action Programme
Jacqui Smith has announced that an extra £5m will be spent on extending the government's Tackling Knives Action Programme. The new cash will be used to extend the programme for another year and to extend it to cover two new areas: Kent and Hampshire. Read more here
