Dear Colleague,

As you know, burglary has come down significantly – by 55% since 1997.  This is a large part due to the efforts of local agencies and partnerships.  But in difficult economic times we cannot be complacent about burglary, and the Home Secretary announced in February that she would be developing new work to take pre-emptive action to keep burglary down.  Following on from this yesterday the Home Secretary announced a new package of measures to keep burglary down which included the launch of a burglary pack for members of the public and a burglary action plan called Securing Homes: Action Against Burglary.

New Public Burglary Pack

A new burglary pack has been published to help the public take simple preventative steps to protect their home. The pack can be viewed online at www.homeoffice.gov.uk/secureyourhome.   Alternatively members of the public can order hard copies by calling 0800 456 1213.

The new pack contains:

  • Guide to home security leaflet
  • Self assessment
  • Neighbourhood Watch leaflet
  • Keep it safe, keep it hidden, keep it locked advice booklet
  • Private Sector Tenants leaflet
  • Bogus Caller leaflet
  • Checklist door hanger
  • Policing pledge
  • B & Q voucher (only available in hard copy, not online)

Securing Homes: Action Against Burglary

There is already significant funding invested in tackling crime (among other priorities) through the Area Based Grant, and programme funding in Wales.  The Home Office is now investing an additional £15 million in the Securing Homes programme for 2009/10.  This money is supporting an action plan that brings together partners from the public, private and voluntary sectors to keep burglary down – ‘Securing Homes: Action Against Burglary’. This action plan will is available at www.crimereduction.homeoffice.gov.uk/burglary/burglary086.htm, and copies can be ordered by telephone 0870 241 4680 quoting reference SHAAB.

Thank you for your continued efforts in protecting the public from burglary.  If you require further information or have any enquiries about this email please contact any of the following.
