Dear Colleagues

Home Office Crime Statistics: January 2009

Please see the attached press release from Bob Jones in respect of the quarterly crime statistics for

October. Also attached is the APA briefing giving a more detailed breakdown of figures for the quarter, along with a supplementary report covering Homicides, Firearm Offences and Intimate Violence for 2007/08. Some notable figures which will have been reported in the press, has been a 4% increase in Domestic Burglary, and the 18% rise in the use of Knives or other Sharp objectives in robberies. A reduction in Gun Crime by 29% is another area of interest for authorities.

As colleagues may recall  the crime statistics for October 08 include an increase of 22% in the Most Serious Violence. This is as a result of a change in how the new offence category of GBH without intent, and clarification of how GBH with intent is to be counted from April 2008 by the Home Office. As a result, the Home Office with support from the APA and ACPO, have commissioned HMIC to quality assure the process and collection of data relating to these categories.
